"Politicians come and politicians go, and the people are looking for things to be better," he said. "And if you can't deliver, they get somebody else to try. "I've been up and I've been down," said Brown. "I'm going to do my darndest to stay up."

Friends: From the beginning of this campaign, I asked Californians who believe in a new vision for our state to join me. I have never stopped being amazed over these many months by the breadth and enthusiasm of your response. Your time and energy were critical to building this campaign. ... We overcame great obstacles to get this far, and I could not be any prouder of the race we ran. I gave it my all and so did you. We came up short, but certainly not for lack of hard work, determination and a clear vision for making our state better. Politics too often lacks humanity; I wanted this campaign to be something different, reaching all parts of California and engaging communities that often are overlooked or whose votes are taken for granted. By that score, we succeeded and how. We took the time and invested the resources to introduce our campaign to the state's incredibly diverse population. We met with hundreds of small business employers and their workers. By Tuesday, we had held more than 750 events. The journey is ending, but the mission is not. We did not achieve the victory we worked so hard for, but that is not a reason to give up on what's most important. We love California and we still believe our state can be a better place. You probably are familiar with my belief in the Power of Many. We proved it at eBay, and we proved it again in this campaign: Together, inspired people with common goals can accomplish what none of us can do alone. If you care about California's future, I have one more request of you: Let's keep working, each of us in our own way, to make our state great again. After all, we are Californians who always see a brighter horizon. Thank you again for being part of this remarkable effort.

The former Oakland mayor also said he will continue living in the Oakland hills with his wife, Anne Gust Brown, although they will find a place to live in Sacramento that will be "modest." Still, he said, "I'm not selling (the Oakland) house until it maintains its original value, and that may take a lot of work on my part."

"You all are fantastic," she said. "This office has done so much for this campaign, for California, for our children and our grandchildren. Give yourself a huge round of applause." "This is my third rally of the day in offices like this, I've got a couple more to go," she continued. "I can feel the energy and the enthusiasm."

"California has been a place that attracts people because they have a future," Brown said as he campaigns to return to the governor's office, which he held from 1975 to 1983. "You know, it attracted Meg Whitman 30 years ago. It is still attracting people. And why is it? Because here's a place, wherever you come from, you come to California and you're welcome."

"Thanks for being here, kicking off this last phase of the campaign," the 72-year-old former governor said. "I've done this many times, and I always find it exciting." Brown called campaigning "ever new," even if some of the supporters familiar to him were "not as new as you were 20 years ago." Brown said, "After all this campaigning and all the ads and all that, that you're here at this hour of the morning, thank you very much. I mean it's a renewal of faith and enthusiasm, and that's what we need going forward."

Brown talked about jobs and the economy before losing his train of thought, saying he wasn't sure what more to say. "I don't like to say the same old, same old," he said. "That's one of the reasons I'm always getting off script. Some candidates feel very secure with messaged discipline. I get very bored with that, because to me life is a continuing discovery." Later, he said, "OK, I think I'll stop there because I might say something I might regret."

"Today the state of California has broken many peoples' dreams. I see it everyday on the campaign trail. The dream is not alive, as it once was, not with 2.3 million looking for work," said Whitman.

Well, the answer is it breaks my heart, but she should be deported because she forged documents and she lied about her immigration status. And it breaks my heart! Gloria Allred pulled off a political stunt. And you know what? On November 3rd, no one's going to care about Nicky Diaz. But the law is the law and we live in the rule of law. It's important. So here's the plan for illegal immigration. And it is a problem not only in California but across the country. First and foremost, we have to secure the border between California and Mexico. I'm here in San Diego. A couple months ago, I spent a day on the border between California and Mexico. We have not given the border patrol agents the resources they need either in personnel or technology. And there are many countries around the world who have proven that they can secure borders. We need to do that. Second we have to hold employers accountable for hiring documented workers. We need a great e-verify system that allows people to know whether that worker is 100 percent legal or not. Gosh, I'm a testament to someone who saw a valid California driver's license, a Social Security card, and it was all, you know, was -- she was not here legally. So we've got to do that. If you hire, knowingly hire undocumented workers, you know, there has to be a penalty for that. Then we've got to eliminate sanctuary cities, San Francisco being the case in point in California. But then we've got to combine that with a temporary guest worker program. There are many industries that need to rely on a guest worker program to get their work done. And we need to have people here legally, be out of the shadows, but it has to be a temporary guest worker program.

Brown, in contrast, initially rambled, jumping from talking about his grandmother reading him Bible stories to his time as a Jesuit seminarian in a "cocoon of religious fervor," to his mother bringing order to a chaotic household. "I've always appreciated that relationship between order and chaos," he concluded.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman lashed out at rival Jerry Brown on Thursday, accusing the Democrat and his labor allies of spreading lies among Latinos about her position on immigration as her poll numbers have plummeted among that key sector of the electorate. "It makes me mad that he's just out there telling lies," Whitman said after touring a small Latino-owned Los Angeles business that imports and manufactures decorative metal pieces for homes. "He accuses me of not being truthful. He is the one just not telling the truth on this, and it makes me mad and I'm not going to let it stand."

At the San Jose rally, Brown attacked Whitman in an allusion to her poor voting record as well as her lack of government experience. "If you went to any business in America and said, 'Here's my resume. It's blank,' they wouldn't hire you for even the littlest position," Brown said.

And he mocked the billionaire former EBay head for her refusal to say how much she would benefit from the elimination of the tax. "Maybe somebody stole her tax returns like somebody stole her mail," he said, a reference to the controversy over Whitman's former employment of an illegal immigrant housekeeper.
