"I'm grateful to have the support of Commissioner Steve Poizner. Steve and I have a shared belief that we must improve California's business climate, cut government spending and fix the state's public schools. I appreciate that Steve is backing my campaign, and look forward to winning the support of all Californians who share my vision for making our economy stronger and our government more accountable."

Speaking without notes, an animated Brown said Californians faces "tough choices" and "shared sacrifice" in the months and years ahead. "It's going to mean doing stuff out of our comfort zone -- all of us."

During his turn on stage, Brown assailed his opponent's plan to jump-start the economy by cutting taxes for businesses and the rich, which would boost the state's deficit at the expense of the working class. "Where does all the money go?" Brown said. "It goes to the wealthiest part of the California society. What we need is fairness."

"What's most important is to bring people together to emphasize the basics, which is we don't want anyone to fall so far below they can't support their family or live a decent human life," he told an adoring crowd at a sweltering labor picnic at the Santa Ana Zoo. "It's about economics, but it's also about morality. It's also about serving the common good. It's about uniting Californians, not dividing them."

Republican nominee Whitman, speaking at a GOP picnic in Columbia State Historic Park in Northern California, said voters would decide whether she or Brown was better suited to create jobs and which candidate knows more about the economy and small businesses. "I think I win that hands-down," she said in brief speech. "I've been in business 30 years, and I've never seen the waste, the mismanagement that goes on in Sacramento

"At this point, I've got the energy, I've got the enthusiasm, and I have the will to transform this breakdown into a breakthrough," Brown said. "In fact, precisely because it is a breakdown we're going to have a breakthrough. We just have to pull together, and we have to get it done."

Mr. Brown said that the only way for Oakland to rebound was to get money flowing from private developers. “Maybe some people think it was anti-progressive,” he said. “I’m just telling you I don’t have that ideological baggage.”

Well, I think he has not done a good job. Unemployment now nationwide is at just about 10 percent – slightly over. The stimulus program appears to not have delivered the jobs that they had promised America. And the jobs that have been created I think are now at a cost of over $400,000 a job. So this was not a good investment of American taxpayer money. And what my view in the state of California and frankly in the U.S., we’ve got to focus on creating the conditions for small businesses to grow and thrive. We’ve got to give them certainty to hire. We’ve got to encourage small business to make a comeback. And that’s what I want to do here in California.

Whitman campaign spokeswoman Andrea Jones Rivera responded by calling Brown’s plan for green jobs “fanciful.” “He has no plan,” she wrote in a written statement. “Meg is committed to promoting policies that ensure California remains a leader in clean energy. She is the only candidate in the race who has a plan to create 2 million jobs in all sectors of the economy in the next 5 years.”

But Brown said that her plan would mean billions of dollars in losses of state revenue, which would hurt services such as schools and law enforcement. “We can’t afford to do that at this point,” he said, standing in the parking lot of the business on Newton Avenue, adding that the state couldn’t “go back to the same old nostrums of loopholes, tax breaks, and the other kinds of things” Whitman is proposing.

Most of the politicians there have not had jobs in the private sector during their career, not all but most have not. And here is what we've got to do the number one issue is unemployment and jobs once again we've got to make sure that California is the very best place to start and grow a business. And there isn't another candidate in this race who knows more about jobs and the economy and the conditions that are required for small businesses to grow and thrive. If we're going to be led out of this recession we're going to be led out by small business. That's the number one focus of my campaign.

2.3 million Californians wake up every morning not knowing what they’re going to do. And I see this tearing at the fabric of our very culture. And that’s why the number one thing we have to do is we’ve got to put Californians back to work.

"Do you know who's as excited about this election as we are?" Whitman asked. "The people of New York. They have suffered the financial reforms that are going to crimp our ability to raise capital and they want California to turn the corner."

In an interview Thursday, Whitman praised the Republican line-up as diverse ethnically and also by gender and geography. But she said she her key issues are “jobs and the economy and getting government spending under control so that we can solve the budget crisis.”
