Brown, Whitman use unusual strategies in new ads

Some interesting ads from the candidates as they make a last-ditch effort to appeal to voters this week.

If Meg Whitman's use of Democratic heavyweight Bill Clinton in an ad ruffled feathers a few weeks back, Jerry Brown has stepped it up a notch with his latest spot starring Whitman herself.

The 30-second clip begins with Whitman saying: "You know, 30 years ago anything was possible in this state." Cut to black and the words: "Who was governor 30 years ago? Jerry Brown." Then the standard stuff about ditching the limo and the governor's mansion, jobs, clean energy and so on - and then back to Whitman, saying (we think, the sound at this part is about as garbled as the "Whoregate" tape): "I mean, it's why I came to California so many years ago."

For her part, Whitman, who's none too happy about the latest poll showing her trailing Brown, has resorted to telling voters she's the lesser of two evils.

In her latest 60-second spot, Whitman begins: "I know many of you see this election as an unhappy choice between a longtime politician with no plan for the future and a billionaire with no government experience."

She goes on to say she's running for governor to "restore the California dream for everyone."

"If you want more of the same from Sacramento then vote for my opponent," she says. "If you want to get California moving again, I'm ready. Are you?"
